Letting Go of a Small View of God

In 1989 the film, “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” premiered. The film became a popular movie in our household. While the premise of a scientist accidentally shrinking his kids was humorous, it becomes much more serious when we apply that how we treat God. And yet, many people, unknowingly, shrink God down to a version they feel much more comfortable with. A god who winks at their sins and is more like a genie in a bottle who exists to respond to their beckon call. As we open up God’s Word today we see a much different view of God.

Most often those things people give up are temporary, just during that season of time. I’d like to suggest to you a series of things that are worth giving up for the rest of your life. And today we’re going to begin by focusing on the habit of being a “people pleaser”.

Unforgiveness tends to imprison us while we think we taking out revenge on the other person. One of the Scriptures I used during that sermon was Hebrews 12:14-17 which cautions us against allowing a bitter root from growing up in our lives. Unforgiveness may be evidence of the existence of a bitter root in our lives, but there are also other bitter roots that are just as dangerous. This morning we’re going to explore the origin of this bitter root reference in the Old Testament and find out how that might apply to our lives today.
